Coombe Girls’ School Street Zone
Overview
We invite the community to share their views on the proposed Coombe Girls’ School Street Zone, covering Darley Drive and surrounding roads in New Malden.
We propose that most motor vehicles would not be permitted to enter the School Street zone between 8:00 - 9:00 am and 2:45 - 3:45 pm, Monday to Friday during school term time only (including inset days and strike days), unless an exemption applies.
Exemptions normally include, but are not limited to - residents of the school streets zone, staff working at the school, parents and children with special access needs (blue badge etc.), care workers attending residents and emergency services.
The proposed School Street Zone would cover the following roads:
- Darley Drive
- Buxton Drive
- Bakewell Way
- Cromford Way
- Matlock Way
- Branksome Way
A detailed map is available to view in the additional documents provided at the bottom of this page.
The proposal aims to address traffic problems across the wider local area, rather than concentrating solely on the road directly outside the school gates. Restricting traffic on Darley Drive alone could displace school-related traffic onto neighbouring streets. A wider zone aims to address congestion and improve safety across the local area, for both school children and local residents.
This is an opportunity to further understand local experiences, identify potential benefits and concerns, and gather suggestions.
Residents’ views will help inform the process before any decision is made on whether to introduce the restrictions.
Reasons for considering a School Street Zone
Darley Drive, which provides the main access to Coombe Girls’ School, experiences congestion during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. Similar concerns have been reported on nearby residential roads.
The issues identified include:
- Traffic congestion when large numbers of pupils arrive at or leave school.
- Inappropriate parking and stopping near the school entrance and on surrounding streets.
- Reports of aggressive driving and concerns about pedestrian safety.
- Disruption to residents and access to their homes.
- Difficulties for pupils and families who wish to walk, wheel or cycle to school.
- School staff having to spend time managing traffic outside the school instead of carrying out their usual responsibilities.
Vehicle exemptions
We propose that Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras can be used to enforce the restrictions, as signs alone might not be sufficient.
Eligible residents and school families would be able to apply for exemptions through an online vehicle exemption portal operated by our Permits Team (APCOA).
The proposed exemptions may include:
- Residents, pupils and parents or guardians who need vehicle access because of a disability, restricted mobility or special educational needs (SEN).
- Residents who require regular daily support from friends, family members or care staff travelling by motor vehicle during the proposed restriction periods.
- Residents who may need a temporary exemption relating to pregnancy/ maternity, or temporary injuries.

Next steps
Feedback received will be collated and presented to the New and Old Malden Neighbourhood Committee meeting on 21 January 2027, to help inform the Committee’s consideration of the proposal and the next steps. If a scheme is ultimately introduced, its impacts will be monitored, including traffic levels, travel habits, parking, safety, access and any displacement onto surrounding roads.
