Trial School Street at Christ Church Infants & Nursery

Overview

A School Street is a road near a school that is temporarily closed to most motor vehicles during school drop-off and pick-up times. The aim is to make it safer and less polluted for children to walk, wheel or cycle to school by reducing traffic, congestion outside the school and engine idling, which improves air quality. 

Certain vehicles, such as those for residents or emergency services, are still allowed to use the road.

We have successfully launched ten School Streets across Kingston and will be introducing a trial at Christ Church Infants & Nursery, Lime Grove, New Malden on the 3rd November 2025 until June 2026.

The New and Old Malden Neighbourhood Committee approved this trial School Street scheme on 6th March 2025, subject to continued engagement with the local community. The monitoring data, together with feedback from residents and schools, will be presented to the Neighbourhood Committee, which will then make an informed decision about the trial’s future.

Location and timings of the School Street trial

Access will be restricted on Lime Grove between Poplar Grove and Coombe Road. The scheme restricts motor vehicles between 8.15am-9.15am and 2.30pm-3.30pm Monday to Friday only (term time only, and not bank holidays). Visitors to the Toolstation car park will have to exit left onto Lime Grove and return to Coombe Road.

Enforcement of the restriction will be by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera. 

This scheme will be implemented using an ‘Experimental Traffic Management Order’.

1. Formal support and objections

• All feedback submitted via the TMO process will be considered when the Committee is making a final decision on the scheme.
• All formal feedback must be given before 1 May 2026.

2. Sharing your day to day experience of the scheme

• This feedback helps us understand if there are any changes we need to make during the experimental stage of the scheme.
• This feedback will be considered with all formal feedback when the Committee is making a final decision on the scheme.
