Thank you to all of those who took the time to give us their feedback on the installation of three changing places toilets in the borough. We received 48 responses from residents and local groups during our recent engagement

The feedback has helped to inform the next steps.

We have now submitted a planning application for two of the sites - and the third will follow shortly. All of the information can be viewed on the council’s planning applications portal using the reference number below for each site:

  • 24/00551/CREG3 for Thameside Car Park/ Canbury Gardens
  • 24/00550/CREG3 for Hook Centre, Hook Parade
  • To be confirmed shortly for Latchmere Recreation Ground.

Subject to planning approval they will be installed and available for use by the end of June 2024.

Overview

Kingston Council has been given a fantastic opportunity to provide three Changing Places toilets in the borough.

Changing Places toilets are larger accessible toilets with equipment such as hoists, privacy screens, adult-sized changing benches, peninsula toilets (where there is space on both sides of the toilet) and space for carers.

They can be used by people with profound and multiple learning disabilities or with physical disabilities who often need extra equipment and space to allow them to use public toilets safely and comfortably. Members of the community with a Radar key will be able to use them.

We have secured £120,000 funding from the Government to provide three registered Changing Places toilets. The council will provide additional funding if needed and support the cleaning and maintenance of the new toilets.

The application for funding was based on feedback we received from a survey we carried out in 2021 about public toilets in the borough. The survey highlighted the need for this type of toilet. The new toilets will contribute to ensuring Kingston is a fairer borough, for everyone.

Three sites have been carefully chosen where they will benefit people, there is space for them and they can be connected to water and power. The locations also meet Government guidance and advice from Muscular Dystrophy UK. They will be registered and in use by the end of June 2024.

The locations are:

  • Latchmere Recreation Ground
  • Canbury Gardens
  • Hook Centre, Hook Parade

We are continuing to look at wider public toilet provision in the borough and other locations for Changing Places Toilets which we could bid for funding for in the future.
