Closes 27 Oct 2024

Opened 19 Sep 2024

Overview

Our vision is to create a cleaner, greener Kingston and our streets play a major role in this plan. We are committed to making cycling and other forms of active travel attractive, safe and accessible for as many people as possible, providing travel options that help tackle the impacts of climate change.

The original Kingston to New Malden cycle scheme was approved for construction by the Environmental and Sustainable Transport Committee on 11 February 2020, following completion of a public consultation. The route was partially built but not completed due to lack of available funding.

We are now working to complete the route, and have amended our designs for the section between London Road and California Road.

Since the previous consultation, we reviewed the effectiveness of the existing sections of route, and made some improvements.  Also TfL has created the SuperLoop bus network, including the SL7 which runs along Cambridge Road and Kingston Road. We have revised our plans for the section from London Road to California Road to reflect the importance of this corridor for buses as well as cyclists, including retaining as much of the existing westbound bus lane as possible while completing the cycle route.

  • Bus stops will not have dedicated cycle tracks running behind them (known as “Floating bus stops”), a key learning from previous cycle route feedback. There will be shared-use areas at each bus stop to ensure pedestrians have priority at all times.

  • Cycle improvements in both directions moving cyclists away from vehicles along the full route eastbound and between Georgia Road and Dickerage Lane and Gloucester Road to London Road westbound.

  • Wheelchair / Walking improvements - new paving, and management of street furniture to provide wider and smoother footways.

  • Raised crossings, continuous crossings, and/or shorter crossing areas to improve walking and wheeling priority at side road crossings (Chatham Road, Cambridge Gardens, Waters Road, King Henrys Road, Archdale Place, Dickerage Lane, California Road, St Johns Road and Georgia Road).

  • Three tree saplings will be removed from the north side of Cambridge Road between Dickerage Lane and Waters Road to allow for wider / clearer pedestrian as well as the cycle track. A total of three tree saplings will be added at Hawks Lane, Waters Road and King Henry’s Road.

  • Proposed works will be coordinated with the development at Cambridge Road estate where possible.

  • Bus lanes will be active 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  • Bays for blue badge holders remain in the same location, but move to the carriageway to allow for eastbound cycle track and clearer pedestrian areas with fewer vehicle movements in pedestrian areas.

  • Driveway access is to be retained, with angled kerbs installed where driveways cross the proposed cycle track.

  • Decrease in the number of parking bays by five spaces on the section from Waters Road to King Henry's Road. With a mixture of carriageway and footway parking bays.
