Canbury Gardens shared pedestrian and cycle path trial

Closes 9 May 2025

Opened 9 May 2024

Overview

Canbury Gardens bandstand

A shared path for pedestrians and cyclists has been installed in the historic green flag park Canbury Gardens for a one year trial period.

The shared path has been created on the existing footpath so that cyclists and pedestrians can both use this route.

The aim is to make the park safer and more enjoyable for all users. During the trial we want to hear feedback from park users about your experiences using the shared path. The shared path, if it becomes permanent, will allow the existing cycle route beside the river to be returned to a natural state which will improve the visitor experience of the waterfront area and allow nature to flourish, supporting biodiversity and becoming a greener Kingston.

In 2023 over 100 people gave us feedback on our proposals. We have used this feedback to make some changes to the plans. In response to your feedback we have included:

  • More tactile paving at the entrance points of the shared path and where it meets other paths in the park.
  • Signage which encourages users of the shared path to be considerate.
  • Signage reminding cyclists to keep left, give way to pedestrians and where needed use their bell to make people aware of their presence.

The creation of the shared path is part of the 15 year masterplan to protect and enhance Canbury Gardens which was developed following extensive engagement with local people and organisations and endorsed by the council in 2021.

If you have any questions, or need any of the information in a different format, please get in touch with us. You can email greenspacesteam@kingston.gov.uk or call the council's contact centre on 020 8547 5000 and ask for Colin Stuart to call you back.

Why your views matter

Your comments will help us assess if we need to make any changes during the trial and understand how well it is working. By sharing your experiences of the trial path you can help to shape decisions about whether the changes are made permanent or not. If it is made permanent your feedback will also be taken into account if any modifications need to be made to the final design.
