Park Road proposed traffic calming

Overview

Our vision is to create a cleaner, greener Kingston and our streets play a major role in this. We want everyone to feel our streets are spaces where they can breathe clean air, walk safely and feel connected to the local community.

The average speed recorded on Park Road during a month-long speed survey in March this year (2024) was 22.95mph. However residents are concerned about vehicles speeding on the road.

We are therefore proposing to install five additional speed cushions to address concerns about speeding in the road and want to hear your views.

Speed cushions are an effective traffic calming measure, encouraging drivers to reduce their speed while driving through residential areas. As Park Road is on a bus route, we are proposing speed cushions that are bus friendly with no impact on bus journeys. The picture below shows what one of the speed cushions could look like.

The speed cushions are being proposed in the following locations:

  1. Near Audric Close junction in front of 14a Park Road, approximately 100m away from the roundabout
  2. In front of 18 Park Road, approximately 100m away from the Audric Close junction
  3. In front of 127 Park Road, in front of the lamp post, approximately 100m away from the zebra crossing near Alexandra Primary School.
  4. In front of 68 Park Road, near the junction with New Road
  5. In front of 168 Park Road, without blocking the driveway, approximately 100m away from the roundabout

There is a map available to show these locations

This proposal has been carefully developed to ensure safe streets for all users.

Share your views

We want to hear your comments and feedback on the proposed speed cushions and any thoughts and experiences you want to share about what the situation is like in the road now.

If you need help accessing materials or responding to the feedback form, please email us at streetspace@kingston.gov.uk or call our contact centre on 0208 547 5000 and ask for a member of the Engagement & Commissioning team to call you back.

Why your views matter

We will review all of the feedback and prepare a report with recommendations for the next steps. This report will go to the Kingston and North Kingston Neighbourhood Committee for consideration.

What happens next

During the consultation period, 424 letters were sent out, with 35 responses  received from the residents via this survey and emails. 19 of the responses were against the proposal and 13 responses were happy to proceed with the speed humps.

After carefully reviewing all the responses and considering the views expressed by residents, Counsellors  then discussed the result with council officers.  It has been decided that, at this point, no changes will be made to Park Road.

This decision was not made lightly. We took into account the diverse opinions and the overall impact any changes might have on the community. The feedback indicated a wide range of perspectives, and we concluded that maintaining the current state of Park Road is the best course of action at this time.
